The Faculty of Arts is distinguished by students and staff who work together within and across disciplinary boundaries to ask questions about socially complex problems, identify paths of research, analyse and communicate ideas in creative formats and reflect on the skills and knowledge they will need to understand the world, past and present.

The Role

Housed with the Faculty of Arts, the Sociology Department at Macquarie has a lively program of teaching and research that harnesses theoretical and applied strengths of the discipline. We are seeking to recruit an eminent scholar with world-class standing in any of our key research areas:
Political Economy and Social Policy; Public Sphere, Social Movements and Everyday Citizenship; Migration, Multiculturalism and Nations; Gender, Generations and the Intimate Sphere; Sociology of Culture and Everyday Life.
The successful applicant will be required to demonstrate:

    An outstanding contribution to research (including competitive grants)
    A history of successful mentoring of junior staff
    Excellence in supervision of Higher Degree Research Students
    A passion for teaching and the capacity to offer programmes that extend and complement existing programmes
    A vision for the development of Sociology at Macquarie University

Selection Criteria
To be considered for this position applications must respond to the selection criteria below and attach it as a separate document in the application process.

•  A PhD or equivalent relevant doctorate
•  Outstanding contributions to scholarship and research in the discipline as evidenced by ongoing publications in top tier journals and recognition as an eminent authority in the discipline
•  Extensive experience in, and a capability to, supervise and mentor research students and staff members
•  A national and international reputation in research
•  Proven ability to attract industry funding or competitive grant funding
•  Demonstrated willingness to undertake management responsibility at a senior level in the Department, and to contribute to Faculty and University matters
•  Distinguished record of high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
•  High quality interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrated commitment to teamwork
•  A demonstrated leader in the profession, a sense of responsibility and integrity in matters pertaining to all related academic activities of the Department, Faculty and University

Salary Package: from $159,533 - $167,074 p.a. (Level E), plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
Appointment Type:  This position is available on a full time continuing basis and will be subject to probationary conditions. The role will commence in January, 2015.
