Call - 2 Research Positions at Max Planck in Mechanisms of Normative Change?

Deadline: 30 November 2015

The Max Planck Research Group “Mechanisms of Normative Change†at the Max-Planck-Institute for Research on Collective Goods aims to fill several research positions. We are looking for

1 Doctoral Student and 1 Postdoctoral Researcher

interested in joining an interdisciplinary group of social scientists with backgrounds in sociology, economics, social cognition, and psychology. The group investigates the underlying mechanisms of social norms and the conditions under which they change.

Typical questions would be: Why are many norms so persistent, even when a large majority of the population would prefer not to have them? Which mechanisms, for instance, stabilized the existence of foot binding in China? How could we prevent the spread of inappropriate behavior in social networks such as schools or Facebook? Under which conditions does normative conflict emerge, and can it eventually be resolved?

We try to understand the underlying mechanisms of normative change using tools such as game theory or agent based models. Empirical strategies involve web and lab-based experimental methods, social network analysis, and the analysis of big data. Experimentalists with experience in web-based experiments (e.g. mturk) are particularly encouraged to apply.

We would be grateful if you could circulate this opening in your network to people who are highly qualified and who might be interested in the study of social norms and in joining the group in Bonn, Germany.
