Call - 2 PhDs in Family Size & Social Inequalities (Dept Sociology, Oxford)

Deadline: 20 January 2017

Funding for graduate study

FAMSIZEMATTERS - Two fully-funded studentships

Applications are invited for two fully funded 3 year PhD (DPhil) studentship based in the Department of Sociology to begin in October 2017. These studentships are available on Professor Christiaan Monden's ERC funded project on Family Size and Social Inequalities (FAMSIZEMATTERS).

The successful studentship applicants will be part of the ERC funded project FAMSIZEMATTERS, which studies questions about how family size affects the (re)production of social inequalities. This project team is led by Prof. Christiaan Monden and consists of a number of post-doctoral researchers and research assistants. The project sits at the intersection between Sociology and Demography. The geographic focus is Europe and East Asia, though not all sub-projects have a comparative component.

The PhD theses of the successful studentship applicants will focus on a particular sub-project within the larger project. Possible subject-matter of the two studentships: only-children and socioeconomic inequalities; childlessness and socioeconomic inequalities; impact of children's socioeconomic position on their parents' well-being; high-fertility sub-populations in low fertility societies; and family size and gender inequality.

APPLICATIONS
Applications are welcome from candidates with an excellent undergraduate degree and a relevant Masters degree or relevant experience. The deadline for applications is 20th January 2017 and applications should be submitted through the usual route for applications to the DPhil in Sociology (http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/courses/dphil-sociology).

Any enquiries should be directed to Professor Christiaan Monden (christiaan.monden@sociology.ox.ac.uk).

In addition, the Oxford Pershing Square Graduate Scholarship is available for up to five extraordinary 1+1 students who are committed to addressing world-scale social challenges.  The Scholarship provides full funding for tuition, college fees and living expenses for both the MSc and MBA year.

The final application deadline for the Oxford Pershing Square Graduate Scholarship is fast approaching on 17 March 2017.

Economic and Social Research Council

The University of Oxford, along with the Open University and Brunel University, is part of the 'Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP)', and will be awarding ESRC studentships at these three institutions to begin from October 2017.  These ESRC studentships are offered either on a fees only or full award basis, which is determined by whether a student satisfies the ESRC's residential eligibility requirements (please see the ESRC website for further guidance on this).
The Studentships are either for an MSc followed by a DPhil (known as
1+3), and MPhil followed by a DPhil (known as 2+2), or for a DPhil only
(known as +3).  Prospective students need to apply to their intended programme of study by the January application deadline, i.e. 12 noon on Friday 20th January 2017, in order to be considered for nomination for an ESRC studentship. If you are intending to apply for the DPhil, or a taught course progressing to the DPhil, and want to be considered for an ESRC Studentship you must send notice of your interest together with a one page summary of your proposed research. The results of the internal competition for ESRC Scholarships will be made public in the first week of April. Prospective candidates should carefully read the Sociology Pathway's page, the Grand Union DTP page, and the ESRC website for further information.

Clarendon Fund

All graduate applicants to degree-bearing courses are eligible for this prestigious scholarship funding. Approximately 130 awards are made across the University every year and most of these provide only partial funding, though some full awards are made too. Please see the Clarendon Fund website for further details. Prospective students must apply in the January application deadline (20 January 2017) for admission to one of the Department’s degree programmes.

University Studentships

The University also offers support for international students and a small number of scholarships for UK students fulfilling certain subject or regional nationality requirements. The Graduate Fees, Funding and Scholarship Search lists the awards available each year.

College graduate student funding

Some Oxford colleges make funds available to support graduate students in their studies; the amount and the conditions vary from college to college and in some cases from year to year. The Oxford Fees, Funding and Scholarship Search lists awards available from colleges and you should check individual college websites for information on eligibility and application procedures. Graduate studentships are also sometimes available to students once they have started their studies in Oxford, from some colleges – again, check individual college websites and the University Gazette for announcements. For 2017-18, students who are admitted to Nuffield College to undertake one of the courses offered in Sociology will have full funding underwritten by Nuffield for the duration of the fee liability of the course. Prospective students can also apply for one of two MPhil Scholarships offered by St Cross College.

Other sources of funding

Occasionally, special sources of funds become available for graduate student in particular subjects. Any information that the Department receives about such schemes will be posted here. Prospective graduate students from outside the UK may be able to access other sources of funding including from their home state or other schemes. There are also sources of funds available to students after they have begun studying at Oxford– including essay and thesis prizes, research assistance and teaching for the Department and for colleges. Funding may also be available for specific parts of a course – e.g. to undertake fieldwork or to study in overseas institutions. Information about sources of support in the Department for current graduates will be posted on the Department’s website as when this is available.

Aziz Foundation Scholarships

Funds for overseas (non-EU) students

There are a number of University-administered schemes to provide funds for international students, some of which are limited to certain countries. The most well-known of these are the Rhodes Scholarships.
Information is available from the website of Student Funding Services and in the Graduate Studies Prospectus.
